General FAQ's

Good to Know Information

  • Spectators are not allowed on courts during play.
  • Pickle Juice is a cashless facility.
  • Members and guests can pay using club credit, credit card, or The PJ App.
  • If you find you’re winning consistently, you should move up. If you’re being outplayed and losing consistently, you should move down.
  • Pickleball is more fun and enjoyable when teams pair off against teams of near-equal abilities.
  • COURT SHOES ARE REQUIRED TO PLAY
  • DEMO paddles are available for rent at $5.

How Does Open Play Work?

During open play pickleball sessions, players rotate, socialize, experience, and enjoy the game of pickleball.

  • Proper start of play will be with four (4) players on the court.
  • The game ends when one side reaches eleven (11) points, winning by 2. Losers come off (First game of the open play session ONLY).
  • A maximum of 2 games is allowed for the remainder of the session.
  • The side closest to the front door always serves first.

What Are Skill Levels?

Players should self-select their appropriate level of play.

  • Beginner: This player has limited experience. Can sustain a short rally with players of equal ability. Basic ability to keep score.
  • Experienced Beginner: Understands fundamentals. Learning proper court positioning. Knows the fundamental rules and can keep score.
  • Intermediate: Moves towards the non-volley zone when an opportunity arises. Acknowledges the difference between hard and soft games and is starting to vary their own game. Can sustain short rallies. Learning proper court positioning. Basic knowledge of stacking and understanding situations where it can be effective.
  • High Intermediate: Knows how to hit all the fundamental shots and is starting to develop shot selection and proper court positioning during rallies. Ready to learn how to control the pace of the game with resets and speedups, mastery of the transition zone, and how to use spin appropriately.
  • Advanced: Controls and places shots effectively, consistently varies shots for competitive advantage, and is very comfortable playing at the non-volley zone. Works with a partner to control the line. Can block hard volleys directed at them. Has the ability to change a hard shot to a soft shot.

What Are Rating Types?

  • Self-Rating: A new member may self-rate based on their own assessment of their skills. See the links for skill level assessments. Player Skill Assessments.
  • DUPR: Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating is a global rating system. All players, regardless of age, gender, location, or skill, are rated.
  • DUPR Rating Session: PJ invites you to become a member of the Pickle Juice club on DUPR.
